EXTENDED WRITING ON TRUTH/POWER

TRUTH/POWER
I was thinking a lot about power and methodology.  I was reading a lot of Michelle Foucault and essays explaining Michelle Foucault, and listening to a lot of Wu-Tang Clan.  I was thinking about how Foucault explains ‘Power’ (which is complicated) and how Wu-Tang explains power (Cash Rules Everything Around Me C.R.E.A.M get the money dolla dolla bill yall).  While ultimately I think that pairing a high-brow thing and a low-brow thing is a cheap maneuver (one I employ in almost all of my projects) I wanted to make a situation where I could include different methodologies of people explaining a thing to me.  I chose the twin topics of ‘Truth’ and ‘Power’, which are about the heaviest and mercurial topics I can think of.  I chose texts which I thought were both interesting within themselves and would dog whistle different niche audiences. These texts came from: Karl Marx (philosopher), Bruce Nauman (contemporary artist), The Wu Tang Clan (New York rap group), and Alan Moore (graphic novel author).  Unfortunately, a large part of the installation was stolen from the show before it could become documented and is not included here. Not shown is additional text and a book bound on both sides so it cannot be opened without being destroyed (a much better creation of my previous project ‘The fifth column’).  Both the leather bound book dissected by the cream bottle, and the double bound book were intended to be things to be considered within themselves amongst the glow of these gigantic concepts.  I think these book-objects carry the burden of being expected to be the thesis on Truth and Power, a discourse which is introduced but not contributed to. Ultimately I think they are forgiven for just being aesthetically pleasing.
